PulseGrid: see your home's energy use as it happens
PulseGrid started with a simple question: why does a household only find out how much energy it used when the bill arrives? Most homes run dozens of devices around the clock — water heaters, air conditioners, fridges, routers, chargers — and almost none of them say what they cost while they are running. PulseGrid was built to make that visible, one circuit at a time.

At its core, PulseGrid is a small clamp-on sensor that sits in the main electrical panel and reads the current on each circuit every second. The readings are sent to the PulseGrid app, which turns them into a live picture of the home: what is drawing power right now, which rooms use the most, and how today compares with the same day last week. There is no rewiring and no smart plugs to buy for every socket; a licensed electrician fits the sensor in about thirty minutes.

The part people notice first is the live pulse. Open the app and you see a single line that rises and falls with the home's demand. Switch on the kettle and it jumps; turn off the air conditioner and it settles. Over a few days that line teaches more about a household's habits than a year of bills. Families tell us they find the old freezer in the garage that runs all night, the water heater that reheats a full tank at two in the morning, or the gaming PC that never really sleeps.

PulseGrid then learns the shape of each appliance. Every device has a signature — the way its draw starts, peaks and cycles. After a short learning period the app labels those signatures automatically, so the dashboard reads "washing machine, 0.9 kWh" rather than "circuit 4". When a familiar device starts behaving strangely, for example a fridge compressor that cycles twice as often as it used to, PulseGrid flags it before it turns into a repair bill.

Saving energy should not mean living with spreadsheets. PulseGrid keeps the advice short and specific. Instead of generic tips, the app suggests one change at a time and shows what it is worth: shift the dishwasher to after ten at night on a time-of-use tariff, lower the water heater by five degrees, or replace a single always-on device. Each suggestion comes with an estimate in kilowatt-hours and in money, and the app checks a month later whether the saving actually happened.

For homes with rooftop solar, PulseGrid shows production and consumption on the same timeline. It becomes obvious when the panels are exporting cheap power to the grid while the home buys expensive power back in the evening, and the app recommends simple ways to use more of what the roof makes — running the pool pump or the washing machine at midday, or pre-cooling the house before sunset. Battery owners get a clear view of when the battery charges, when it discharges and whether its schedule matches the tariff.

Small businesses use PulseGrid in the same way. A café, a clinic or a workshop often has a handful of large loads that decide most of the bill: refrigeration, ovens, compressors, lighting. Seeing those loads separately makes it easy to spot equipment left on overnight, to plan maintenance before a motor fails, and to show staff the difference that closing a cold-room door makes. Several of our early business customers cut their monthly use by between eight and fifteen percent without buying new equipment.

Privacy is part of the design. Readings are encrypted on the device and in transit, and the household owns its data. PulseGrid never sells usage data and never shares it with an energy retailer unless the customer asks it to. Everything the app knows can be exported or deleted from the settings page at any time.

The hardware is meant to last. The sensor has no moving parts, runs on the panel's own power and receives updates over the air, so new features arrive without a visit from an installer. The app works on Android, iOS and the web, and a whole family can share one home with separate logins and notifications.

PulseGrid is not about watching every watt. It is about knowing enough to make a few good decisions and then getting on with life. Most households need two or three changes to see a real difference on the bill; the hard part has always been knowing which two or three. That is the question PulseGrid answers.
